We
bought this 2001 Formula 400SS in 2005 as a hurricane salvage boat. It
had been blown up on shore. Both drive units were broken off. The boat
did not sink but waves crashed into the engine compartment and both
engines and the generator were full of salt water. The bow rail and part
of the windshield were destroyed and there was glass damage everywhere.
We re-did this boat alongside the Chris Craft 422 project. Both took
almost four years to complete but both turned out beautifully. We had
problems getting parts for a 2001 but 2005 parts were readily available.
So we ended up not just fixing the 2001 back like it was but instead
"converting it" to a "2005" style boat.
New dash and instrumentation,
silver Imron hull paint, larger rub rail, 2005 upholstery, wood
cabinetry inside and finished it off with a "flexiteek"
cockpit floor. We rebuilt the engines and replaced the generator and
most of the systems in the boat. This boat was purchased because it had
the highly desirable 500EFI engines. When we were done this boat had the
look of an '05 or newer boat but also had the extra speed and
performance of the 500EFI's. Most of the '05's and '06's had 496's which
run several miles per hour slower and don't have that sweet sound like
the 500EFI's have.
The boat was actually sold before
it was completed. When we finished it for the owner we added several
other upgrades at their request. We were very happy with the final
result. It turned out to be a beautiful boat!
